Hanukah During COVID-19

Around the world
families and synagogues gather
masked and physically distanced
dressed for the weather
outside synagogues
bringing light into the world
the first candle
Shabbat candles
the second light
lighting flames to dispel the darkness
remember how strong we are
each day for eight days
celebrate life as it is
here and now

Favorite One

Jealousy and hate welling up
for the favorite one
a child
a town
a nation
a leader

The favorite one blessed with abundance
where there is not enough
love, food, resources perceived

And we look for ways to share
more
―Genesis 37:1–11

Vayeshev / וַיֵּשֶׁב (Genesis 37:1–40:23) Word Cloud Poetry, the most common words found in a selected text are the largest in a Word Cloud creating a visual representation of important themes.

Joseph and Brothers

Brothers dreaming
planning
eating
traveling
not always together
in unison

― Genesis 37:1–40:23 Word Cloud Poetry, the most common words found in a selected text are the largest in a Word Cloud creating a visual representation of important themes.

The Right Time

When is the right time to do good
when everyone is home watching
when none of the household is inside
when God is watching
when is the time to see my own image reflected back to me
reminding me to do good
and that I am never truly alone
― Genesis 39:7–19

Menorah, Symbol of Hanukah Strength

“Not by might and not by power, but rather by my spirit alone.”
like Zechariah
may we see we do not already know everything
about Hanukah
relationships
the world and life
acknowledge our roles
parents, leaders, teachers, and rabbis
start from curiosity
look to deeper meaning
equate uncertainty with a chance
to see in a new way
―Zechariah 2:14–4:7
